About CaSS

Our mission is to facilitate the transition to competency-based education, training, and credentialing through the development and dissemination of open source infrastructure and tools.

CaSS can be deployed as a public or private cloud-based solution. Competencies stored in CaSS are automatically exposed as linked and open data to facilitate machine readability. CaSS can be configured as a lightweight open system or as a highly secure system with strong cryptography. Blockchain technology can be used to create competency records that are secure, verifiable, and shareable only when authorized.

An open-source project funded by the US Government

The project began in 2015 with funding provided by the US Department of Defense Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative. CaSS continues to be supported and funded by the ADL.

The CaSS Project is an open source, community-driven effort including the work of many individuals and organizations involved in competency-based education and training. CaSS collaborates with many relevant competency-based initiatives. Contributions of code, use cases, user stories, references, resources, and comments are welcomed and are shared on GitHub.

CaSS facilitates machine readability and interoperability with other systems by automatically exposing competencies as linked and open data. CaSS can be configured as a lightweight open system or as a highly secure system with strong cryptography. Multiple instances of CaSS can communicate and work together through a federated architecture. CaSS can be deployed as a public or private cloud-based solution.
